The association's strict membership requirements attest to the financial and professional competence of participating airlines and approved agents.

This trade body represents some 240 passenger and cargo airlines, which together are responsible for 84% of the world's air traffic.
For 60 years the Association has been developing the commercial standards that have built a global industry. It ensures that people and goods can move around the global airline network as easily as if they were on a single airline in a single country.

The relationship between member airlines and their registered cargo agents is administered under a set of IATA resolutions. These government-approved rules establish the rights and obligations of all parties, as well as the procedures and requirements for agents wishing to obtain and maintain industry certification – thus becoming part of the airlines' global distribution network.
