UK ecommerce sales into Europe (IOSS)
UK ecommerce retailers selling to the EU
Looking for UK based ecommerce fulfilment to help you sell online into the EU?
Managing ecommerce sales from the UK into Europe
Since leaving the European Union, the UK no longer had a simple free trade agreement with the EU. These changes came into play July 1st 2021 and means all commercial goods imported to the EU are subject to VAT, regardless of value. To continue to sell into the EU, online retailers need to collect VAT at the checkout - declare VAT for customs clearance - and submit VAT returns. This is also dependant upon which country your customers are based in, your product's country of manufacture and the value of the items sold.
Import One-Stop-Shop (IOSS) - managing the challenges of UK to EU ecommerce
The Import One-Stop-Shop (IOSS) is an online portal which you can use to comply with the VAT obligations when selling goods to EU customers. By registering with IOSS, you will avoid having to create 27 different EU member states to report the VAT to. This is because IOSS gives you a single VAT ID number to cover all EU countries. This only simplifies the declaration and payments of VAT for distance sales of imported goods with a value less than €150. One solution is to ship to the EU via an online marketplace like Amazon. They will have registered for IOSS directly. Which means all you need to do to remain compliant is capture their marketplace-registered IOSS number within your shipping data, on all goods sold through their sales channel.
This avoids delays and surprise fees for the buyer
IOSS makes the process easier for the buyer, who is only charged at the time of purchase, and therefore does not face any surprise fees when the goods are delivered. If the seller is not IOSS-registered, or the relevant paperwork does not accompany the package, the buyer has to pay the VAT and typically a customs clearance fee is charged by the transporter at the moment the goods are imported into the EU.
